Edwards Pierrepont papers, 1862-1866.

The Edwards Pierrepont Papers relate to the case of Samuel Smith v. Major General Benjamin F. Butler, who during the federal occupation of New Orleans had confiscated $50,000 in gold from Smith's bank to pay Federal soldiers. Letters deal with Smith's institution of the suit and subsequent dismissal of it after he received restitution from the federal government. Included in the collection is a clerical copy containing the proceedings of a commission of inquiry at New Orleans in 1862 relative to the case, a steel engraving of Butler in uniform, and a copy of the New York Tribune for April 28, 1862 reporting the capture of New Orleans and the panic and destruction of property accompanying it.
